In 2019, as St. Vincent Hospital celebrates 140 years of caring, we will begin construction on a new, state-of-the-art hospital. This is made possible by community and taxpayer support and a financial turnaround which is currently underway at St. Vincent General Hospital District (SVGHD). We will update the project and construction news regularly on this page.

The district’s recent strength has resulted from a total shift in philosophy and culture at St. Vincent Hospital. Under the leadership of the board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, Gary Campbell and Chief of Medical Staff, Lisa Zwerdlinger, MD, the hospital has focused on offering patients the care they need locally. Inpatient beds were reopened in 2017 and by comparison, inpatient days in 2016 totaled 3 2016 totaled; the total in 2018 was 392.
Additionally, the hospital has added new services such as stress echocardiograms, swing bed services, inpatient hospice, and respite care. Physical therapy reopened in 2017, and now the department employs 2 full-time doctors of physical therapy. After outsourcing the business office for many years, St. Vincent invested in bringing the office back in-house. The hospital also implemented a new electronic health record and billing management software. Now when billing questions arise or patients need financial assistance – help is available in person or over the phone from friendly and knowledgeable hospital team members.
Looking to the future, the district has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency and other health-related offices reside in the current hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent new hospital facility.
The project is in the design and review phase with Davis Architects at this time. The RFQ went out on January 31 for potential contractors request for qualifications. Contractor RFP’s will be distributed on February 18.
Signs of construction to begin at St. Vincent Hospital
The July 4th holiday week will mark the beginning of construction activity at St. Vincent Hospital. Construction vehicles and equipment will arrive at the site of the new hospital location on 4th Street (between the current hospital and the Leadville Dog Park.) In future weeks, preparation of the land will begin – this will include installation of construction fencing, clearing of trees and dirt work.
Crews are expected to work Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The hospital parking lot connecting between W. 6th Street and W. 4th Street will be closed to through traffic. The Lake County Public Health and LCBAG parking lot will remain open and accessible from 6th Street.
It’s a new day and St. Vincent Hospital is here to stay!
