St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

Let’s Talk About Women’s Health

This week is Women’s Health Week! Now that the flowers, cards and loving sentiments from Mother’s Day have been shared and expressed – let’s talk about your health.

It is common that women ignore their well-being while caring for those around them. When it comes to handing out advice, the cheeky old saying, “do as I say, not as I do,” is hereby retired like avocado green appliances from the 1970’s.

Here and now there are some simple steps to prioritize your health. After all, if you are not well, who will care for your loved ones?

Step 1. Schedule an annual well-woman visit

Today – right now, schedule your annual well-woman visit with your primary care provider.  You can schedule it in the future – just get it on the calendar once every 12 months. Put a reminder on your calendar, in your cell phone or personal device too.

Step 2.  Know your family health history.

Your family’s health history is an important part of your personal health record. It will help your provider to be aware of health conditions that run in your family.  Use this external link  to assist you in tracking your family history.

Be prepared to tell your doctor or nurse this information during your well-woman visit. Don’t forget to share any new health problems in your family since your last visit.

Step 3. Engage in conversation.

Make a list of questions for your visit. This visit is a great time to ask your provider or nurse any questions about:

  • Birth control options
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Preparing to get pregnant
  • Menopause
  • Signs of an unhealthy relationship
  • Anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues
  • Eating healthy or being more active

Take a notepad or smartphone and write down the answers so you remember them later.

What is a well-woman visit?

Well-woman visits include a full checkup, separate from any other visit for sickness or injury. These visits focus on preventive care for women, which may include:

  • Services, like vaccines (shots), that improve your health by preventing diseases and other health problems
  • Screening tests, which are medical tests to check for diseases early when they may be easier to treat
  • Education and counseling to help you make informed health decisions

What happens during a well-woman visit?

Your well-woman visit is a chance to focus on your overall health and wellness. There are 3 main goals for the visit:

  • Documenting your health habits and history
  • Getting a physical exam
  • Setting health goals

You’ll probably discuss steps you can take to improve your health such as:

  • Getting more physical activity
  • Eating healthy
  • Managing stress
  • Quitting smoking
  • Watching your weight
  • Getting enough sleep
